For the first half, it looked as if Evans and Pickering were going to have a close battle on the hardwood.
And the Pickering shifted into another gear.
Five Red Devils scored at least nine points, led by senior Brendan Smith, as Pickering took an 81-49 victory over the Eagles on Thursday at the annual Rosepine Tournament.
Pickering (2-0) and Evans (2-6) exchanged leads several times in the first quarter.
The Red Devils got the first lead of the game on a bucket in the post by Nathan Stevens, only to see Evans answer on the other end with a long three-pointer from Trevor Fox.
The Red Devils got a pair of free throws from Stefan Parker and a bucket by Blake Allen to take a 6-3 lead, but Evans responded with a three-pointer from Galloway Outlaw and a conventional three-point play from Zane Crocker to retake the lead, 9-8.
The lead changed hands five more times in the first period before the Red Devils went on an 8-0 run over the final 90 seconds, getting a three-pointer from Javon Boyd, three free throws from Smith and a bucket in the paint from Parker, allowing Pickering to open up a 23-16 advantage at the end of the first eight minutes.
Evans answered Pickering's late first-quarter run with a surge of its own, going on a 10-2 run.
Although Pickering got a bucket from super sophomore John Isaac, the Eagles got eight points from Elijah McClintock, along with a driving layup from Rico Garcia, taking a 26-25 lead.
But as quickly as Evans surged, the Red Devils returned the favor, ending the first half with a 15-3 run. Smith had six points, while Boyd added five points during the spurt, which saw Pickering take a 40-29 advantage into the intermission.
A free throw from Fox got Evans to within 10 points early in the third quarter, but Pickering again made a run.
The Red Devils used a 15-0 run to open up a 25-point advantage, getting seven points from Stevens and six more from Smith as Pickering took a 55-30 lead before Fox nailed a three-pointer for Evans to temporarily stop the bleeding.
Pickering managed just four more points in the frame, while Evans got 10 more, including another Fox three-pointer, along with a triple from Garcia and two free throws from McClintock, getting to within 16 points heading into the fourth quarter, 59-33.
It was all Pickering over the final eight minutes as the Red Devils closed with a 22-6 spurt to secure the victory.
Smith led Pickering with 23 points, while Isaac finished with 12 points. Boyd added 11 points, while Parker and Stevens contributed 10 and nine points, respectively.
Garcia paced Evans with 15 points, while McClintock and Fox were in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Pickering faces Merryville on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the tournament, while Evans takes on Northwood today at 5:30 p.m.
