Vernon Ray (Shorty) Herring, 93, of Leesville, passed from this life on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 in Richmond, Texas. 

Survivors include his loving wife of 13 years,  Floyce Loftin Herring of Leesville; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Danny Filla of Needville, Texas; granddaughter, Stacey Filla of San Marcos, Texas; grandson and wife, Jeffrey and Sarah Filla of Richmond, Texas; great granddaughter, Ellye Filla and Baby Filla of Richmond, Texas; sisters, Lois Johnson and Lucille Crosby of DeRidder; stepchildren, Naomi Turner of Shreveport, Winston Cooke of Panama City, Fla., Voncil Stephens and Rhonda Vanover both of Leesville; 13 stepgrandchildren and numerous step great grandchildren.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, John and Catherine Herring; first wife, Rosabell D. Herring (married 42 years); brothers, Herbert, Ralph, Arnold, J. E. and James Herring; sister, Ruby Haymon. 

He was a lifelong resident of Leesville.  He proudly served in the United States Army in World War II, a decorated Veteran who fought at the Battle of the Bulge and in Normandy, France on D-Day. 

He was a longtime employee of George James Red & White grocery store.  He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. 

Services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the East Leesville Baptist Church.  Ministers will be the Rev. Morris Goins and Rev. Gill Arthur.  Visitation was held on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Tuesday Nov. 25, 2008 from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Hixson Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Osville Haymon, Billy Glenn Herring, Elton Herring, Martin Herring, Charles Johnson and Pete Stephens.
