DeRidder's pressure and depth were too much for rival Leesville on Saturday night, giving the Dragons a 68-44 win in the final game of the CSB Timberland Christmas Classic at Jerry Hickman Memorial Gymnasium.
The game started with Jake Greene continuing his hot shooting from the night before. DeRidder's first two baskets were threes from the senior guard, and after Justin Vick got a putback, Greene hit another three to make the score, 11-5.
It looked as if Greene's hot shooting would come to an end as the second quarter started when both teams struggled to score.
Leesville got six points from Kevin Edwards, the only points scored in the first 4:30 of the quarter to draw the lead to just two.
But DeRidder responded with a 12-4 run over the last 3:30 keyed by two points from Tony Story and Greene's three free throws. The run helped DeRidder to a 10-point lead at the half, 30-20.
The third quarter was more of the same, as the DeRidder fullcourt press began to create turnovers that led to easy baskets.
Greene scored his only three points of the half on a driving layup on which he was fouled and hit the free throw, but other DeRidder players began to step up.
DeRidder was led in the game by Greene's 21 points. Josh McBride had 14 and Marcus Melvin added 11.
Liggins led the Wampus Cats with 20 points, 13 in the second half.
With the win, the Dragons claimed the CSB Timberland Christmas Classic title for this year.
Leesville's record is now 10-9 on the year.
