Valley Electric Membership Cooperative will be offering rides from a number of locations to its voting station in Natchitoches on Jan. 30. The co-op needs at least 1,500 members to vote, with at least two-thirds of those voting agreeing to the proposed dissolution, before it can move forward with its merger with SWEPCO.

Valley Electric members can now get a ride to Natchitoches to cast their votes Jan. 30 on whether to allow Valley Electric Membership Cooperative (VEMCO) to dissolve itself, selling all assets to  Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO).
Members are set to vote at Natchitoches Central High School in Natchitoches. If the merger is approved by Valley members, SWEPCO will purchase the VEMCO assets for about $94 million and assume certain other liabilities.  A minimum of 1,500 Valley member-owners must vote in person. Two-thirds of those voting must vote in favor of the merger for the plan of dissolution to pass.
According to the state statute, the dissolution will provide Valley members a portion of the company's capital equity, which is calculated at $30 million. Members will receive amounts that will vary based on the length of time each was a Valley member-owner.
VEMCO has also stated that the dissolution will provide a 20 percent reduction in rates. Opponents of the idea say that the dissolution will cause the loss of local ownership and local control, as well as the loss of the co-op model.
