Both teams were physically spent. The Leesville Lady Cats were playing without junior Tiffany Wallace, who had rolled her ankle earlier in the fourth quarter. The Peabody Lady Warhorse had used up most of their energy trying to rally back from a 14-point deficit in the first half. But right near the end, the Lady Cats found one last burst. Leesville (16-11, 4-0) got seven points from sophomore Ashley Hoecker over the final three minutes of play as the Lady Cats ended the game on a 14-1 run, leading to an 84-76 triumph over the Lady Warhorses (14-7, 3-1) in a huge District 4-4A contest on Tuesday. The Lady Cats jumped out to a big lead early on, thanks mostly in part to 15 first-quarter points from Wallace. Chelsea Martin added five points, while Hoecker and Jasmine Wright all contributed points as Leesville took a 24-12 lead into the second period. Behind solid play in the second quarter from standout Chrishonda Whitlock, the Lady Warhorses were able to cut the Leesville lead to six points on a couple of occasions. However, Leesville always seemed to get a couple of buckets back to go back up by nine or 11 points. Whitlock nailed a jumper in the lane to get Peabody to within eight, 38-30, only to see Hoecker knock down a free throw, which was followed up by a bucket from Wallace, giving Leesville an 11-point edge. However, Triesha Owens sank a three-pointer a little later for Peabody, but Wallace made a free throw right before intermission to send Leesville into the locker room with a 42-33 cushion. Peabody continued to march back into contention, thanks in part to three three-pointers in a row from Owens. Leesville was up, 52-41, before the barrage of treys as the Lady Warhorses cut the deficit to two points, 56-54. But a late bucket from Hoecker pushed the Lady Cats back out to a four-point edge heading into the fourth period. Leesville's lead grew to 60-54 after a bucket from Martin to open the final frame, but Whitlock scored seven points during a 9-0 Peabody run, which saw the Lady Warhorses take their first lead of the game at 63-60. A little later, Wallace was injured and spent a couple of minutes on the floor. She was removed from the game and looked as if she may not return. Peabody, however, was unable to take advantage of the situation. The Lady Warhorses did extend their lead to 74-68 on a basket from Whitlock. But back came the Lady Cats. A pair of free throws from Hoecker got Leesville to within four, 74-70. After a Whitlock free throw, Wright converted on a layup after an assist from Wallace, who had re-entered the game with about 2:30 to go. With 1:23 to go, two free throws from Hoecker got Leesville to within one. Wallace stole the inbounds pass and scored, giving the Lady Cats a 76-75 lead. From there, the Lady Cats scored eight of the final nine points to secure the win. Wallace scored a career-high 44 points to lead the way for the Lady Cats, while Hoecker and Martin each contributed 14 points. Whitlock had 31 points to lead Peabody, while Owens scored 19 points. Ashley Madden chipped in with 10 points. The Lady Cats go on the road on Friday to face Tioga in a district matchup, while Peabody takes on Alexandria.
