The Peabody Warhorses entered their District 4-4A game with Leesville with a perfect record on the season. And the No. 1 team in the state in Class 4A left that way. Behind 24 points from Oklahoma State commit Markel Brown, the Warhorses posted a 79-49 win over the Leesville Wampus Cats on Tuesday in front of a packed house at LHS. Peabody (28-0, 2-0) took the initial lead of the game on a short jumper from Shon Lowe, but Leesville (4-15, 1-2) responded with a three-pointer from point guard Anthony Davis, giving the Wampus Cats a brief lead. The Warhorses answered with an 8-0 run, getting four points from Troy Jones, along with a bucket each from Brown and Josh Ivory, to take a 10-3 lead. Leesville managed to get back to within five after a Reggie Smith basket, but Brown responded with a thunderous two-handed jam on the other end for a 12-5 Peabody lead. However, the Cats got a thunderous dunk of their own when Levander Liggins emphatically slammed home a missed three-point attempt, cutting the deficit to 12-7. But Peabody scored the final four points of the first period to take a 16-7 advantage. The Warhorses opened the second quarter with one of their trademark runs, using a 9-0 surge to take a 25-7 lead, which included a three-pointer from Ivory and another dunk from Brown. Eventually, Peabody opened up a 19-point advantage, but a late run from Leesville allowed the Wampus Cats to go into the intermission only down by 13 points, 31-18. The second half belonged to Peabody as the Warhorses outscored Leesville, 48-31, over the final 16 minutes to get the win. Brown led the way with his 24 points, which included five dunks. Ivory and Jones each added 12 points, while Lowe and Sherrard Davidson each contributed eight points. Liggins paced Leesville with 24 points, while Davis and LaShawn Waters each finished with nine points. Leesville is at Tioga in district play on Friday, while Peabody takes on Alexandria.
