A B-40 fighter airplane was dubbed the "Wampus Cat" in  1942 by Staff Sergeant Winston H. Werner of the 66th Fighter Squadron, 57th Fighter Group attached to the British 8th Army in Africa. Werner, a resident of Leesville and a 1939 graduate of Leesville High named the plane after the high school mascot while serving as airplane crew chief in the Egyptian Desert. - from The Leesville Leader, Jan-Apr 1981.
