Amanda Hunt was recently recognized by the Vernon Parish School Board as the support person of the year for the parish at the elementary level.
Support personnel include custodians, cooks, paraprofessionals, secretaries and bus drivers. The school board receives nominations from each school which are then submitted to a committee tasked with choosing one person each for the elementary, junior high and high school categories to represent the parish.
"These people are dedicated individuals," said Tommy Neubert, Director of Child Welfare and Attendance. "They don't make a great deal of money, but they show up everyday."
East Leesville Elementary Principal Ramona Bennett described Hunt, a paraprofessional for an La-4 classroom, as someone who strives to go above and beyond what is expected of her and is often the first to step up to coordinate aid for families in need.
"She's just there always to fill in," said Bennett. "Words can't express what this lady means to me and our school."
Hunt simply loves her job, she said, especially working with kids. She received a plaque and stipend of $300 in recognition of her devotion.
