Students at North Polk Elementary School recently celebrated Earth Day by sprucing up the school grounds with flowers donated by a local conservationist.
Earth Day came a week early for about 180 LA-4 students at North Polk Elementary. Students planted colorful periwinkles in the flower beds on the school campus.
Rose Sharbeno, Calcasieu Soil and Water Conservation District, led the beautification effort with assistance from GATES program volunteers and teachers. The up-and-coming green thumbs also learned about the importance of recycling and made a flower from egg cartons. Materials for this project were funded through a grant from the Louisiana Serve Commission and the Office of Lieutenant Governor.
