The Vernon Parish Fair Board will be hosting its inaugural West Louisiana Archery Festival in conjunction with Team Bowmasters this weekend at the Vernon Parish Fairgrounds.
The event begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and will start back up again at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
"We hope to make this an annual event," said organizer and fair board member Darryl Hinson.
Team Bowmasters puts on similar events throughout the nation 20-30 times a year, said Hinson, including a Realtree event and a Bass Pro Shop event in Springfield, Mo.
The event will take place under the covered arena at the fairgrounds. On Friday and Saturday nights, shooting will continue as long as there are archers wanting to  shoot, said Hinson.
The finals, a 16-person draw, will be on Sunday. There is only one division: bow hunter.
Archers who plan to compete must pay a $20 initial shooting fee, which entitles them to one free round of five pop-up targets and one scoring round.
Each target pops up for 10 seconds, then goes down again, said Hinson. Range finders will also be on hand for those who want to use them.
After shooting a free round, archers will shoot the scoring round. The score made in that round will stay with the archer throughout the competition. However, scores may be improved by paying $10 for a replacement round, for a maximum of five replacements.
The 16 best scorers will compete on Sunday, with prizes, including a tree stand, arrows, releases and more, to be awarded to the winners.
Aside  from the competition, bag targets will be set up in the livestock arena for warm-up and free clinics conducted by professional archers. Food vendors will also be available selling hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks.
Bowmasters of Arkansas is a family owned business, which hosts 3-D pop up archery tournaments throughout the United States. Archery events are held at various locations such as hunting expos, archery shops/stores, churches, archery clubs and outdoor hunting events.
