Thursday, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LA DOTD) was set to remove the flashing beacon at the La. 8/28, La. 117 and La. 1213 intersection in preparation for the construction work beginning next week at the site.
DOTD will be modifying the intersection to provide safer and smoother traffic flow, according to a press release from the city.
“I am grateful for LA DOTD’s efforts on behalf of the city and I look forward to the changes ahead,” said
Leesville Mayor Robert Rose who has been in communication with LA DOTD for some time about streamlining the traffic flow at the intersection.
The intersection has been a source of frustration for many, especially since a double fatality occurred there In June 2008.
DOTD closed the intersection for about three days while workers reconfigured it with pavement markings, raised markers and channelizing devices in order to restrict drivers' opportunities to make unsafe judgments.
Some residents and officials had suggested that a traffic light at the intersection would be the solution to the problem, but DOTD disagreed.
