Central Louisiana Technical College has announced the beginning of new adult education classes to be offered to residents of Central Louisiana. The transition of the adult education program comes as a result of Senate Bill 297 which transferred oversight of the program from the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.
The Lamar Salter campus of Central Louisiana Technical College serves as the main instructional site for Vernon Parish residents desiring to enroll in the program. A Leesville base will be located at West Leesville Elementary to meet the needs of residents within the city limits interested in adult education classes. Distance learning opportunities will also be available for students opting to study course content online.
"Central Louisiana Technical College is pleased to have been awarded this grant to advance our efforts in transforming adult education in Central Louisiana," Jimmy Sawtelle, the interim director of the CLTC, said. "We know investment in education results in better pay for central Louisiana residents. We are grateful to our partners at the Vernon Parish School Board for their leadership in transition."
Donnis Poe will serve as the adult education project coordinator for the region. The Vernon Parish School Board is working closely with the college to ensure a seamless program transition without interruption of services to students.
The adult education program will continue to serve undereducated adults ages 17 and above as well as 16-year-olds who are not enrolled or required to be enrolled in secondary school under act 59 pursuant to R.S. 17:221-F: Compulsory School Attendance Age.
"Adult education in Vernon Parish is a program which has benefited the community for many years," Jackie Self, superintendent of the Vernon Parish School District, said. "The transition of the program from the Vernon Parish School Board to Central Louisiana Technical College is seen as a positive move toward expanding and enhancing course offerings for the public. The existing partnership with the college and the school board have paved the way for the transition of the program without interruption of services to the public. The Vernon Parish School Board looks forward to working with the college in this new endeavor."
