U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu wants the Army to expand Fort Polk.

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu wants the Army to expand Fort Polk.
On Monday, Landrieu sent a letter to Secretary of the Army John McHugh to express her support of buying 8,250 acres of land that the Army has sought to purchase. The senator says a deal with the land's owners could be reached within the next 30 to 45 days.
Landrieu said the "new land is equally important to Fort Polk's mission and the local communities."
Fort Polk and the Army Corps of Engineers have been working to purchase up to 100,000 acres of land for training purposes near the main post and Peason Ridge Training Area since 2009. As part of the 100,000 total acres, officials are looking at land acquisitions in Vernon and Rapides parishes. At the time in which the process was started, officials anticipated that purchases could take three to four years to complete.
