Having celebrated my 84th birthday recently, a long time favorite and greatly loved passage of scripture has become increasingly dear to me. May I share it with you? Thanks!
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fades not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are (being) kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time,” (1 Peter 1:3-5).
I love this word because it reminds me of God’s grace and mercy. There was not anything that I could have done that would have made me worthy of God’s love and salvation. I could not free myself from the power of sin and atone for my guilt. Peter reminds me of “God’s abundant mercy.” Paul called it grace or the unmerited favor of God (Ephesians 2:8). Peter speaks of faith, and Paul adds, “by grace through faith.” I could not be religious enough to be saved. The assurance of my salvation is “the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
But the passage also tells me of my inheritance. It is incorruptible; it will never decay or wear out: it is undefiled – no pollution, so, no allergies - and fades not away. Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, and we are incapable of imagining what God has in store for those who love him (I Corinthians 2:9). One thing is sure, the greatest attraction will be sitting upon his throne.
But our passage tells us that through our faith in Jesus, our reservation in heaven has been made. It is secure. It will not be cancelled! Our name is in his book and our inheritance is safe, and so are we! We are being kept (guarded about) by the power of God. Our security is not dependent upon our strength or goodness – we are being kept by the power of God, ready to be revealed in the last time. While on earth, Jesus said it well: “I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My father which gave them to me is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my father are one,” (John 10:28-30).
I’m 84, and it’s late: knowing that I am secure in God’s hand, I am going to sleep. How about you? Are you “being kept by the power of God through faith ready to be revealed in the last time?” If not, today is the day of salvation – crown Jesus as the Lord of your life – now!
