MONROE – ULM men's basketball head coach Keith Richard announced Friday the addition of Lonnie Cooper as an assistant coach on the Warhawks' staff. Cooper's hiring is pending final approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.

Cooper replaces Brandon Roberts, who decided to get out of coaching and join his family's business in Van, Texas.

"Lonnie had an outstanding high school, college and professional playing career," Richard said. "I think he'll bring that same strong work ethic that he had as a player to his new career as a college coach. I am excited about him joining our staff and becoming a Warhawk."

Cooper was a four-year starter and three-time All-Sun Belt performer at Louisiana Tech from 1995-99. As a senior, he earned first team All-Sun Belt honors and led the Bulldogs to the Sun Belt regular-season title in Richard's first season as head coach. That season, he also led the nation in free-throw percentage with a .921 clip.

Following his career at Louisiana Tech, Cooper played professionally overseas for 11 seasons.

The Tallulah, La., native was a standout player at McCall High School and helped lead the team to one state championship and three runner-up finishes.
