  • The King Day Coalition has announced several events in connection with the 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration.
    The annual oratorical contest and spelling bee will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 10 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, located at 1003 North Gladys St. in Leesville. The theme for the oratorical contest is "What does it mean to me to have an African-American as President of the United States of America?" The contest is open to youth ages 12-18.
    The annual scholarship and pre-inauguration ball will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased from local pastors or by calling (337) 238-1779.
    A King Day Worship Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 13 at the Johnson Temple Church of God in Christ, located at 200 Nona St. in Leesville. In addition, a Women for Obama Inauguration Watch Party will be held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 21 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.
