A traffic stop on I-10 in Lake Charles resulted in the arrest of a Leesville man on drug charges. Joemarko D. James, 27, has been charged with possession of cocaine over 400 grams.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 26, that Lake Charles Combined Anti-Drug Task Force (C.A.T.) Detective Sgt. Jeff Cole stopped a car traveling eastbound on I-10 near the I-210 Lake Charles Loop for a reported traffic violation. James, the driver of the car, allegedly began to act suspiciously during the stop, so Cole had his trained and certified K9, Basco, conduct a free air sniff around the car. After Basco reportedly provided a positive response to the odor of a controlled substance, a subsequent search allegedly revealed a plastic canister containing over 540 grams of cocaine in the car's trunk, with an estimated street value of $40,000.
James was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
He was released on a $25,000 bond set by Judge Wilford Carter.
