Medics from Charlie Company, 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Patriot Brigade) held a mass casualty exercise March 17 at Forward Operating Base Sword. The medical company staged wounded soldiers around the FOB to test the preparedness of its soldiers.
"Today's exercise was to see how we function in the event of mass casualties," said 1st Lt. Antqualene Johnson, 94th BSB. "Simply put, we have a lot of moving parts, and we needed to see how we functioned together to get the overall task completed. In the end, this exercise was about ensuring the treatment of our casualties."
During this exercise, senior medics in Charlie Company were given the task of training and evaluating the new medics.
"A lot of the medics that we have are fresh out of (advanced individual training), so this is the first time that they are getting to see what their role is going to be in their unit during a combat situation," said Sgt.
Roger Shields, Charlie Company, 94th BSB. "Here on FOB Sword, we threw more and more complex injuries at the new soldiers, trying to make it as realistic as possible and making them think outside the box."
The new medics appreciated the training and are eager to use the experience this exercise gave them.
"It definitely helps to receive this type of training," said Pvt. Brandon Loyd, C Co., 94th BSB. "I feel that it is always good to practice and today we were treating the (mock) wounded soldiers like we do real casualties, and it is always good to brush up on things like that."
