Laikyn Craft, a student at Vernon Middle School, read a book titled "Out of My Mind," by Sharon M. Draper. “I really liked the book”, said Laikyn. She was very impressed with a character in the story. The character was a little girl named Melody. Melody couldn’t communicate with people to tell them what she wanted or how she felt. Melody came alive for Laikyn, and she identified and felt compassion for the little girl. Laikyn said, “I imagined what it would be like to not be able to express my feelings to other people." Laikyn enjoyed the book so much that she wrote a letter to the author to tell her how the book had “changed” her. The author, Sharon M. Draper wrote Laikyn expressing she was happy that Laikyn enjoyed the book. Laiken is still communicating with the author through e-mail, and Laikyn is presently reading other books by the same author.
