Alexandria, La. -

Unusual traffic circled Calvary Baptist Church as over 300 soldiers from the 199th Brigade Support Battalion conducted a 5k road march in an effort to raise money for United Way as well as unit funds.
Since the 199th BSB does a road march during annual training every year, the Command Sgt. Maj., Gregory L. Thompson, of Deville, found a way to raise funds, conduct a road march and have a little fun.
“I just figured we may as well march for something that is beneficial, since we do this every year anyway,” said Thompson.
United Way serves as a helping hand for many organizations including women’s shelters, literacy agencies and child services. The unit funds raised will help with family days and special events that are usually held annually.
At the end of the march, the soldiers had jambalaya, made by Sgt. Gateson Celestine from C. Company in Saint Martinville. The jambalaya was sold to soldiers and the public to also help with the fund raising efforts.
