Memorial Fund
A memorial fund has been established for the family of Robert Ross of Anacoco at City Savings Bank. Ross is the son of Nettie Ross and has several siblings who live in the Vernon Parish area. Ross endured a long battle with cancer and funds for his medical and final expenses are being collected.

Vernon Middle School Registration and Orientation
Vernon Middle School is registering new fifth and sixth grade students daily from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. To register, bring your child’s social security card, birth certificate, health card and previous school records. Health cards may be obtained from the Vernon Parish Health Unit or the Bayne-Jones Family Clinic. The school requests that all new students be registered by July 23, 2008. Registration is complete when a V.M.S. registration card for 2008-2009 has been completed and turned in.
Orientation for students and parents will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for fifth grade and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for sixth grade. Everyone is invited to come to meet the faculty and staff and tour the school. There will be a general session in the gym before going to the classrooms. SCUBA classes
Fort Polk's Moral Welfare and Recreation/Rental is sponsoring summer SCUBA. The next session starts July 29, at the 25M pool located on 10th street behind Strike Zone Bowling Center. Classes will be held 5:30-8:30 p.m. each evening. Upon completion of the course, students will have the chance to test their new skills with open water dives at Toledo Bend Lake. The cost of the class is $275. Students who complete the course successfully will have earned an internationally recognized certification.

Summer Picnic Dance
The Red Diamond Swingers Square Dance Club is hosting a summer picnic dance beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 19 at West Leesville Elementary School. Course of Instruction for Election Commissioners
A course of instruction for election commissioners will be conducted at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 31 in the Leesville High School south cafeteria. To qualify for commissioner, applicants must be qualified voters in the ward in which they serve, not be a candidate for election and not have been convicted of an election offense. All qualified persons are invited to attend, and a certificate will be given to those who successfully complete the course.

The Peason Historical Foundation, Inc.in conjunction with the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk would like to invite family members, relatives, friends and neighbors of the original landowners, homesteaders and sharecroppers of Peason Ridge to the dedication of a new historical marker in their honor at the Peason Memorial Park located on Hwy. 118 in Peason Community. at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008. Special guest will be Col. David Sage, garrison commander of Fort Polk. The public is invited to bring their lawn chairs and help honor the heritage families who gave up their lands for the Peason Ridge Military Reservation.
