Iraqi National Police and Multi-National Division soldiers seized a weapons cache in the New Baghdad district of Baghdad July 20.
Police with the 1st Brigade, 1st National Police Division, seized a six-inch explosively formed projectile, a 120 mm artillery round, four rocket propelled grenades and an improvised explosive device at 11 a.m. All munitions were turned in tosSoldiers with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.
Since May 20, in support of Operation Ironhorse Tempest, Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition force soldiers have recovered 458 weapons and munitions caches, including 628 improvised explosive devices and explosively formed projectiles; 991 rocket propelled grenades; 5,471 rifles; 3,073 artillery, tank and mortar rounds; 291 rockets; homemade explosives and various bomb-making materials.
“Given the significance of Sadr City for Special Group criminal activities, in conjunction with the Iraqi Security Forces, MND-B soldiers have been conducting operations throughout the city, focused on historical Special Groups criminal and Al Qaeda in Iraq support zones,” said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, spokesman for MND-B and the 4th Infantry Division.
“This operation, Ironhorse Tempest, is designed to remove many of the weapons and munitions caches in our operating area.”
The most significant recent find was from Abu T’Shir, in southeast Baghdad, where soldiers from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division received a citizen tip and found a cache consisting of 45 Iranian-manufactured 107 mm rockets, 46 Iranian-manufactured 120 mm mortar rounds, 152 Iranian-manufactured 81 mm mortar rounds, 139 Iranian-manufactured 60 mm mortar rounds, a 60 mm mortar tube, a 120 mm mortar tube with base plate, 27 brand new AK-47 assault rifles, 13 rocket propelled grenade launchers, four Iranian-manufactured 40 mm PG-7-A2 rounds, approximately 10,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, more than 35 rocket fuses and nine optical sights for RPG launchers.
