Congress has approved over $70 million in funding for five Fort Polk projects, including over $25 million for acquiring new land for the base.
The funding includes $27 million for land acquisition, $23 million for a brigade complex, $9.2 million for the fire station, $8.3 million for the multipurpose machine gun range and $2.6 million for the military working dog facility.
In total, $70.1 million is allocated for Fort Polk.
"The expansion of Fort Polk is of great importance to nearby communities, as well as for the post itself," Landrieu said in a press release.
At a meeting last week, the garrison commander of Fort Polk, Col. Roger Shuck, said that the acquisition of the land near Peason Ridge would make the base one of the largest in America. The additional land would increase Fort Polk's size to nearly 250,000 acres; some of the Army's other major forts, including Fort Benning, Fort Bragg and Fort Drum, have less than 175,000 acres.
The funding approved by Congress also includes close to $30 million for the Barksdale Air Force Base and $60 million for a VA hospital in New Orleans.
