Governor Bobby Jindal is tentatively scheduled to be in Leesville this afternoon to present the Louisiana Veterans' Honor Medal to local veterans, according to a spokesperson for the Louisiana Veterans Affairs.
The event will take place at 12:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 145 at 304 East North Street in Leesville.
Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Lane Carson and General Bennett Landreneau are also scheduled to attend.
Act 695 of the 2008 Louisiana Legislature, authored by Senator Robert Adley, directed the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs to prepare and award the Louisiana Veterans’ Honor Medal to each Louisiana veteran as a token of the state’s sincere gratitude to men and women of military service.
The intention is to recognize and honor all Louisiana veterans. One side of the gold-tone medal bears an outline of the state and the words, “United States Armed Forces.” The flip side reads, “Louisiana appreciates your service to our country.” All medals may be worn over the neck or pinned on a jacket. Different ribbons distinguish medals for veterans killed in action or wounded in action; others designate veterans who were prisoners of war.
Thus far, Honor Medals have been distributed at The VA Medical Center in Alexandria; Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City; The Gold Star Mothers’ Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon in Baton Rouge; The Disabled American Veterans Annual State Convention in Baton Rouge; The American Legion Annual State Convention in Alexandria; The Veterans of Foreign Wars Annual State Convention in Alexandria; and The Southwest LA Veterans Home in Jennings.
