It was Thursday morning in the Green household. I had been awake for about 30 minutes when I got a phone call at 6:30 a.m.

It was from one of my most favorite coaches ... Georgia Thomas, affectionately known by all of her students and players as Coach T. After a few pleasantries, she told me something I didn’t expect to hear from her. She told me that she was retiring from coaching and teaching.

I will be honest with you, I was stunned. For the majority of my career at the Leesville Daily Leader, she was the rock, the one coach that never left to go to another school.

When I returned in 2007 from Texas, she had just taken the Lady Cats to the state tournament. She guided the Lady Cats back to Kenner in 2009.

Her Lady Cat volleyball teams, featuring some of the most athletic young ladies in Leesville history, including Kyesha Edwards, Ashlee Washington, Chelsea Martin, Hannah Honeycutt, Maile Goodwin and Amy Williams. In recent years, she had Bre’Zhanna Eddington, Brittany Passi, Lina Kava, Dominique Johnson and too many more to name because I would be here all day long.

In her 13 years as the Leesville coach, Thomas guided the Lady Cats to two state tournament appearances and playoff berths in every year since 2006.

There is no doubt she had at least 200 career victories while coaching at Leesville and she will be the winningest coach in program history for a very long time.

Coach T is also one of my best friends. When I was in the hospital earlier this year, she came and visited me on several occasions, praying for my recovery. Coach T and the Lady Cats are one of many reasons I came back as quickly as I did.

Coach T will truly be missed by her players and students.

And one sad sports writer.
