It's been in excess of 30 years since a parishwide basketball tournament was held in Vernon Parish.

That is expected to change in mid-December.

Angie Wise-Davis, the chairwoman of the Vernon Parish School Board Athletic Committee, informed the panel of this event at the most recent meeting Thursday morning.

According to Davis, the Vernon Parish Basketball Tournament will take place Dec. 14-16 at Leesville High School and will be hosted by Hornbeck High School.

The parish tournament was played many, many years back, but had fallen to the annals of history until this year's reboot.

Davis also noted the annual Vernon Parish track meet is scheduled for March 3 at O'Banion Stadium on the campus of Pickering High School, while parish athletic director Hub Jordan delivered members of the committee every school's baseball and softball schedule for 2017.

Jordan also talked with the panel in regards to some new and revised policies in regards to medication, dangerous weapons and students who are expectant parents.

The administration of medication saw one revision as diabetes was added to the policy, allowing for a diabetic student to medicate themselves.

Some slight revisions were also made to the dangerous weapons policy, along with expectant and parenting students.

In other committee news, Vernon L. Travis, the chairman of the Salary/Personnel Committee said a reduction of staff in Vernon Parish is highly likely again as the student count has once again dropped. However, he did say he expected most of the cuts to be accomplished through attrition as it has in the past.
