SIMPSON — The Simpson Broncos put together a 21-0 run during the first half of play, turning a 4-point lead into a huge halftime advantage in a 74-40 victory over the Evans Eagles on Friday night in a District 3-C contest between Vernon Parish rivals.

With the victory, the second-ranked Broncos improved to 27-5 overall, including a 5-1 mark in district play.

The win also guaranteed the Broncos a piece of the District 3-C title with Ebarb, which beat Pleasant Hill easily on Thursday night, 91-47, to claim its share of the district pie.

The Eagles dropped to 4-21 on the season, including a 1-5 mark in district action.

Simpson took the initial lead of the game on a 3-point play from Tanner Yates, only to see Havn Egan drop a 3-pointer from the left wing to tie the game at 3-3.

Yates connected on another layup for a 5-3 Simpson lead, only to see Joshua Brack answer on the other end to tie it again.

But that was the last tie of the game as Simpson scored the next seven points — a 3-pointer by Landon Roberts, a bucket from Cameron Bettez and a layup by Austin Williams — allowing the Broncos to take a 12-5 lead.

The Eagles battled back to cut the gap to three points, but by the end of the first period, the Broncos had moved out to an 18-11 lead, thanks to two free throws by Cameron Walker and a layup from Landon Hall.

Evans managed to cut the gap to 19-15 early in the second period after buckets from Brack and Egan.

But Simpson soon put some distance between it and the Eagles.

Beginning with a 3-point play from Yates, the Broncos went on a 21-0 run to end the first half, with Walker scoring six points and Williams adding six of his own as Simpson built a 40-15 lead at the halftime break.

After an early bucket from Brack cut the gap to 23 points, the Broncos used a quick 9-0 burst to open up a 50-17 advantage and eventually led by as many as 38 points during the third period before settling on a 58-23 cushion heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.

The Eagles managed to cut the deficit to 29 points early in the fourth quarter on a 3-point play from Brack and a 3-pointer from Hunter Smith, closing to within, 58-29.

However, the Broncos were once again able to pull away, with 38 points once again being its largest lead of the frame.

The Broncos and Eagles both emptied their benches in the final two minutes and eighth-grader Preston Miller was able to score on a driving layup for Simpson to close out the contest.

Williams led the way for the Broncos with 23 points, while Walker added 14 points before fouling out early in the fourth period.

Yates chipped in with 13 points, while Bettez and Roberts finished with eight and seven points, respectively.

Brack was the lone player in double figures for the Eagles in the loss as he scored 11 points and had three blocked shots.

Smith and Seth Degley each scored eight points in the contest for Evans, while Egan chipped in with seven points.

The Broncos have one more game left in the regular season as it will play host to Class B top 10 team, Glenmora.

That game is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, with only one contest being played.

After that, both Simpson and Evans will await the LHSAA playoff pairings, where Simpson will receive a first-round bye, while the Eagles will likely have to take to the road in the first round.
