EVANS — Jewel Sharbeno was stellar in the circle, while Faith Cryer did the damage with the bat as the Evans Lady Eagles opened their 2017 softball campaign with an impressive 12-1 victory over the Starks Lady Panthers in five innings.

EVANS — Jewel Sharbeno was stellar in the circle, while Faith Cryer did the damage with the bat as the Evans Lady Eagles opened their 2017 softball campaign with an impressive 12-1 victory over the Starks Lady Panthers in five innings.

Sharbeno, an all-stater last year as a freshman, surrendered just one unearned run on one hit, striking out 14 of the 17 batters she faced. She threw only 66 pitches, 56 of which were strikes. She also had a hit in the contest.

Cryer was 3-for-4 in the game with a triple and a double, while Kristi Jeane, Anna Martinez and Kaitlyn Jeane each added a hit in the win for the Lady Eagles.

DERIDDER — It took eight innings, but the homestanding DeRidder Lady Dragons knocked off the Rosepine Lady Eagles in softball action Thursday evening, 5-4.

With the win, the Lady Dragons are 2-0 on the season heading into the DeQuincy Tournament, while Rosepine, which was also scheduled to play in DeQuincy, is 0-1 with the loss.

DeRidder owned a 4-0 lead after four innings in the books, only to see the Lady Eagles get a 2-run homer from Morghan LaTour during a 3-run fifth. Rosepine added a single run in the sixth to tie things up, 4-4.

After a scoreless seventh, the Lady Dragons managed to score in the bottom of the eighth to get the win.

Lauren Parson got the win in the circle, giving up four runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks. Aubrey Joslin had two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Dragons, while Brionna Crockett had two hits.

LaTour went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, while taking the loss in the circle, striking out eight and surrendering five hits. Desiree Squires added two hits, while Lauryn McMahon had a hit.
