PICKERING — The Pickering Lady Red Devils had never won a playoff game in the history of its softball program.

That is until Monday evening.

Senior Summer Atkins tossed a shutout, while Allie Brister and Madison Shaff each drove in a pair of runs as the ninth-seeded Lady Red Devils dropped the No. 24 Bunkie Lady Panthers in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs, 12-0.

With the victory, the Lady Red Devils improved to 20-13 on the season. They will likely play on the road in the second round at Kinder, unless the Welsh Lady Greyhounds can pull the upset.

Bunkie had a little success in the first inning off of Atkins as Madison Rogers singled and took second when Madeline Ducote reached via the free pass.

However, Atkins worked around those runners by striking out the next batter she faced to avoid a run being scored.

The Lady Red Devils quickly put three runs across in the bottom half of the frame, even without the courtesy of a hit. Atkins was walked, stole second , took third on a passed ball and eventually crossed on an illegal pitch for a 1-0 lead.

Brister was hit by a pitch and eventually scored, while Shay Petty drew a walk and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Karlee Lawrence as Pickering took a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Red Devils managed to tack three more runs on the board in the second inning as Atkins walked, stole two bases and scored on a Brister sacrifice fly. Ryen Lawrence drew a walk and scored on an error, while Spring Atkins, who had reached on the error, scored on an RBI-single from Shaff for a 6-0 lead.

Bunkie managed to get a runner on in the third inning as Rogers singled with two outs, but Summer Atkins forced a groundout to end the frame.

Pickering managed to bat around in the bottom of the frame as Atkins, Stephanie Ferris each walked, stole two bases and scored on errors. Brister and Petty each had RBI-singles in the frame as well, while Shaff drove in another run as the Lady Red Devils moved out to an 11-0 lead.

Atkins shut the door as she retired the last six batters she faced, while also knocking in the final run of the game with an RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth to account for the 12-0 victory.

Atkins gave up no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts, while also going 1-for-1 at the plate with a double and an RBI. She also drew three walks, stole five bases and scored three times.

Shaff had two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Red Devils, while Brister and Petty each had a hit and two RBIs.

Abby Baronne suffered the loss in the circle for the Lady Panthers, while Rogers had both of their hits.
