The Courier and Daily Comet were each named Newspaper of the Year Saturday in their divisions at the Louisiana Press Association convention held in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Keith Magill, executive editor of both papers, was given the 2017 President’s Award for his leadership and contributions to the LPA.

“I am really proud of our staff for the accomplishments that have been recognized in these awards,” Magill said. “You have to do a lot of things right to be named Newspaper of the Year. For both papers to receive that top honor gives our readers an assurance that they are receiving reliable, trustworthy and top-quality local news every day in print and online.”

The Courier won 47 awards -- 16 first place, 18 second place and 13 third place.

Of the Comet’s 52 awards, 19 were first place, 17 were second place and 16 were third place.

The Courier won a sweepstakes award in its advertising competition and the Daily Comet won sweepstakes awards for its editorial and advertising entries.

The designation of Newspaper of the Year is based on the number of points earned in the Better Newspaper Competition for 2016. Editorial contests range from news story writing to graphic design. The advertising entries were judged based on design, creativity and effectiveness.

The Courier is the smallest newspaper competing in a division that includes five others with paid daily circulations between 14,000 and 29,999.

The Daily Comet competes against 10 other newspapers with circulations ranging from 5,000 to 13,999.

Forty-seven newspapers, publications and college and university student publications submitted 2,408 entries in the competition judged by the Texas Press Association.
