The Leesville Mens Mentoring Club (LMMC) recently handed out scholarships to local students from Leesville High School.
Marquan Eddie Colbert, Seth Michael Forque, and Joshua Odom each received and $850 scholarship from the LMMC. The LMMC was formed in 2006, and since its inception it has given out 62 scholarships that total to over $47000 dollars. The scholarships are given to graduating high school seniors to help towards their college education.
According to the LMMC President Darrell Woods The students are chosen by their academics, extracurricular activities, and by submitting an essay. “We have them write an essay and get a letter of recommendation from someone in the community,” said Woods.
LMMC has started a new program this month called “Career Jump Start” which partners with local businesses to provide internships for local students. This gives them some real on-the-job experience before they graduate.
“We have received great feedback and support from local businesses,” Woods said. “Some students future plans may not involve college, and we want to do more for those students while they’re in high school to give them some real job experience.”
