Church security consultation registration with the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office (VPSO) ends on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft recently hosted a church security seminar prompted by the Nov. 4, 2017 killing of 26 people in a shooting event at a small Baptist Church in rural San Antonio.
During the course of the seminar, participants were advised that there would be a future opportunity to register their respective churches for a security consultation.
VPSO is currently registering area churches for those consultations. Church representatives do not necessarily have to have been present at the initial seminar, stated Chief Detective Rhonda Jordan.
During consultation all areas of the place of worship will be photographed and documented. Suggestions to enhance security will then be made by VPSO Deputies.
“The challenges of house of worship are basically the same as a school or business,” stated Craft. “Each location presents unique circumstances such as the size, layout of the building, perhaps the rural location of the building, and the number of potential persons involved.”
Anyone registering for a consultation will have to provide information for a point of contact, church name, church address, and a current phone number for the point of contact.
Following registration, VPSO will get in touch to set a date and time for the consultation.
In order to schedule a consultation, church pastor or a designated representative can call VPSO, 9 a.m. through 3:30 p.m., at 337-238-7248.
