Some Vernon Parish Schools are implementing new security measures starting Monday.

As indicated in a letter to parents, Leesville Junior High School, Vernon Middle School and three Vernon Parish high schools will be using walk-through metal detectors.

All schools will have access to wand-style metal detectors.

These security measures come just over a month after the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office evaluated and made recommendations for crisis plans at each school in the district.

Superintendent James Williams at the March 8 school board meeting made it clear that student safety is at the top of his priorities. “We're at a time in society that I didn't think we'd ever see," Williams said to the board. "Times are changing and we're going to have to have some serious talks about some of the upgrades we my have to do physically at our schools to make them more secure."
