With a pair of home runs and a solid performance on the mound, Jewel Sharbeno had herself quite the debut at the state tournament.
The junior led Evans to a 12-2 win over Summerfield in the Class C State Quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
"We executed at times and sometimes they didn't execute," Evans head coach Floyd Stark said. "They put the ball in play, and that's all I ask of the girls. We made the routine plays.
"These girls keep fighting and showing up day after day. That's all you can ask."
Sharbeno went 2-for-4 with five RBIs while pitching all five innings, striking out 10 and giving up just one hit.
"When she's on, she's hard to hit," Stark said. "We are working through a little soreness with her. She's got five pitches that she uses. The blue was true behind the plate, and I don't think he missed a strike."
With two outs in the first innings, Sharbeno hit her first home run of the night to put Evans up 2-1.
Kristi Jeane drove in Paige Boyd later in the inning to give the Lady Eagles a 3-1 lead
"I gave (Sharbeno) the green light," Stark said. "It was a 3-0 count. Most coaches don't give the green light, but I did. She hit the ball hard."
Jeane went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the win.
Evans scored four runs in the second inning and added three runs in the third, all coming off a three-run home run from Sharbeno.
Leading 11-2 in the fifth inning, the Lady Eagles won on a walk off RBI single by Jeane.
No. 1 Evans will play No. 4 Plainview at 9 a.m. Saturday morning for a chance to play in the state championship.
"We have our work cut out us tomorrow," Stark said. "Plainview has been stalking us, and I told the girls that we haven't seen that good of pitching that they got. They hit the ball well and are well coached. We have our work cut out for us."
