ROSEPINE – A mother and her baby were crossing the railroad tracks near Shannon’s Home Furnishings in Rospine when disaster struck Tuesday afternoon.
A train struck the side of their vehicle with the impact causing it to flip over into the nearby ditch. The two were trying to get to a nearby subdivision when the northbound train hit the right rear side of the vehicle.
While the car was totaled, both the mother and the child made it out alive. First responders got them out of the vehicle and had them airlifted by helicopter to Rapides Regional Medical Center, where they are being treated for minor injuries
According to Louisiana State Trooper Cooper Brown, the two were very lucky because the accident could have been much worse.
“Thankfully both of them were wearing seatbelts and the baby was in a car seat that was properly placed in the middle seat of the vehicle,” Brown said.
