Bastrop nursing homes have always been an integral part of elderly care in the city, and the community celebrated nursing home residents and employees with entertainment and activities this week in 1998 with National Nursing Home Week.
Taking place May 10 through 16 in 1998, National Nursing Home Week is celebrated nationwide with all sorts of festivities to show appreciation for our nations elderly and the nursing home staff that cares for them. The celebration was started in 1967 and always begins on Mother's Day.
The 1998 festivities included a week full of fun at each nursing home. Cherry Ridge Guest Care, for example, celebrated with a balloon release that Monday and honored residents, volunteers and employees on separate days of the week.
Oakwoods started their observance of Nursing Home Week with a Mother's Day Tea, later holding events such as a chicken dinner for employees and an ice cream social for residents.
The Enterprise even got in on the celebration with a six-page spread included in the May 12, 1998 Edition. The spread included information on the history of local nursing homes, the goings on at each one and what they had planned for Nursing Home Week. There were also pictures of residents, staff and examples of nursing home services throughout.
Now known as National Skilled Nursing Care Week, this year's celebration is being held this week as well, and each nursing home, once again, has exciting things planned.
From 1998 to the present, the community has always appreciated the nursing homes that care for its elder citizens, and it showed-and continues to show-its appreciation with this special week each year.
