The Vernon Parish Public Library held its summer reading program signup party on Friday but it is not too late to register.

The library is offering free interactive weekly reading programs and story-time for children this summer. The programs focus on children ages three through 18. Participants will be exposed to guests who encourage reading through methods such as puppetry, magic and live animals.

The program kicks off for the summer on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. with the Leesville Fire Department featuring a fire truck and discussion about fire safety.

Programs will be held at the Leesville, Dunbar and Pitkin branches of the Vernon Parish Public Library system.

The Hunter Safety Course for ages 10 and up is limited to 60 participants, requires advance registration and attendance at both sessions.

Sign-up for summer reading programs is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
