MANDEVILLE, La. — A former Louisiana jail guard has been arrested on charges including misdemeanor sexual battery.

Gerad Yates, 42, of Mandeville was a jail guard in neighboring Tangipahoa Parish at the time of the alleged offenses, but resigned while he was being investigated, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office said.

He was arrested Monday and remained jailed Tuesday in lieu of $120,000 bond.

He's accused of walking into a Mandeville woman's garage June 12, touching her under her clothes and making lewd comments, according to a news release Monday night. She told him to leave but he grabbed her arm, according to the statement. Authorities said she broke away and ran, noting that he had dropped his pants and was exposing himself.

When the woman told Yates she was expecting relatives, he pulled up his pants and went into the front yard, but didn't leave until after a family member arrived, the statement said.

He was arrested on charges of simple battery, misdemeanor sexual battery and obscenity.

Deputy Suzanne Carboni said she doesn't know whether Yates has an attorney.

Before working for the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, Yates was a court security and criminal patrol deputy for the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office from 2007-2009, but was fired for violating departmental policy, the news release said. It did not give details.
