Tammy Anderson, of Leesville, was awarded the Regional Grassroots Citizen of the Year 2018 by the Kisatchie-Delta Regional Planning and Development District.
Anderson won the award for her continued support and contributions to the community of Leesville and her dedicated work as the Director of the Friends of Main Street organization.
Anderson called this award a “very big honor.”
Anderson and the Friends of Main Street organization have been working hard to transform downtown Leesville into an area people will want to spend time in.
She is excited for the recognition her award will bring to the cause.
Anderson and a board of eight volunteers work with the members of the community with the goal of improving Leesville’s main street.
“We’ve been working very hard together. The City, the Chamber of Commerce, the Office of Tourism, the Police Jury, the Police Department, the Sheriff’s Department: we’ve all worked very hard together to bring wonderful things to downtown to get the community involved and see what we have to offer.” Anderson said.
“The main goal of the Main Street Program is to get people down to the area to shop, enjoy entertainment and visit our museum and art gallery,” Anderson continued, saying that progress is happening, but is happening in “baby steps.”
Anderson will be traveling to Arkansa to take part in a tri-state main street convention. She is looking forward to learning from the many different main streets that will be there and has already registered for many different sessions.
As for Leesville Main Street, they have a weekend farmers market in which local farmers and vendors are welcome to participate in.
The organization has just wrapped up a successful kids program at the farmer’s market, with more than 300 kids coming out and participating.
The event was so successful, Anderson and the Friends of Main Street are looking into holding the same program in the fall.
The next big event on the calendar is “Witch Way to Main Street”. This event will be held on Halloween and will be a family friendly event for kids to trick-or-treat.
Anderson shared that the Friends of Main Street are always looking for volunteers.
