Northwestern State University's Cammie G. Henry Research Center will host a "Workshop on Practical and Cost-Effective Practices to Care and Maintain Archival, Manuscript and Book Collections." The workshop will address challenges in the maintenance, care and handling of records, documents, manuscripts, maps and photographic and book collections.
The session will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, led by NSU Archivist and Records Officer Mary Linn Wernet. The workshop will take place at NSU's Watson Memorial Library, 913 University Parkway. A $25 registration fee covers course materials, snacks and lunch.
"As a participant in this one-day workshop, you will learn to identify maintenance and care needs in your institution, gain a better understanding on how to care for your collection, and explore ways to implement practical and cost effective short and long term practices," Wernet said."As your instructor, I plan to optimize the level of discussion, offer interactive exercises and provide valuable information."
NSU's Cammie G. Henry Research Center is sponsoring the workshop in collaboration with the Archival Training Collaborative (ATC), which includes the Louisiana Archives and Manuscripts Association (LAMA), the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Together these institutions are developing a sustainable program of quality, convenient, and inexpensive continuing education opportunities for keepers of the historical record. The ATC is supported by a three-year grant from the institute for Library and Museum Services, a federal funding agency. The collaborative will offer frequent workshops throughout this tri-state region.
Seating is limited to 15 participants and registration closes Oct. 4. For more information or, call (318) 357-4585, or email wernet@nsula.edu.
