The Leesville Fire Department (LFD) is beginning its annual Fire Prevention Fund Drive.

The LFD depends on donations to purchase materials such as coloring books, colors, badges, pens, fire hats and more that they hand out to children while teaching them about fire safety.

“In the past we have used the National Fire Safety Council to collect money and purchase materials for our Fire Prevention Programs,” said Donny McKee Leesville Fire Chief.

Collecting the money locally will allow the department to purchase materials directly from the wholesalers, allowing the department to save funds that can be used to purchase more materials to hand out to children.

Fire prevention week is held in October. During the month fire fighters visit more than 1,600 children, pre-k through third grade, at local schools and daycare centers throughout Leesville.

Supplies are also needed the rest of the year. The fire department hosts station tours and field strips to schools and groups across Vernon Parish.

They also take part in safety events at Wal-Mart and any other functions they are asked to attend.

“All of these materials are needed to help teach our children and grandchildren what to do in case of a fire or other emergencies,” said McKee. “I would like to thank you in advance for assisting the fire department and donating to this worthwhile project.”
