The Vernon Parish Community Orchestra will be auctioning three hand-painted violins at its Fall Concert Sunday.
Local artists, Paula Sche-Baldwin, Kimberly Wallace and Vera Moses have volunteered their talents in creating the one-of-a-kind painted violins. The silent auction will conclude 15 minutes after the concert.
Baldwin, who currently serves as the secretary for the orchestra, said her piece is "a feel good abstract.” A resident of Vernon Parish for 15 years and a Gulf War veteran, Baldwin has traveled throughout the world, which is seen in her art work.
During her teenage years, Baldwin realized she had a gift for visual arts and first tried her hand at mixed media collage. Drawing on life experiences and things that trigger the imagination, she likes her art work to be spontaneous and works in a variety of mediums including sculpture, printmaking and painting. While her favorite artist is Frida Kahlo, Baldwin said she has a great appreciation of many other artists.
Baldwin has been involved with Leesville's Gallery One Ellleven since 2008 as the gallery's marketing and volunteer coordinator. She works to promote the gallery by organizing art walks and receptions.
Throughout December, Baldwin's work will be on display at Threads Boutique in Historic Downtown Leesville.
Sunday's concert will feature "Swanee" and "I Got Rhythm," by George and Ira Gershwin as well as "Hansel and Gretel" by E. Humperdink.
The string orchestra is made up of first and second violin, viola, cello and bass viol performers with accompaniment provided by pianist Quincy Martindale. Dr. Karen Gordy will conduct.
A reception with light refreshments to honor Friends of the Orchestra will immediately follow the concert at the Booker-Lewis House. Prospective friends are encouraged to attend the reception as well, said Jack Causey, president of the orchestra board.
Friend levels include student or senior ($10); individual ($15-24); family ($25-49); patron ($50-99); benefactor ($100-249); sustainer ($250-499); corporate ($500-999); and gold ($1,000 and above).
The Vernon Parish Community Orchestra comprises about 50 volunteer musicians of all ages, from middle school age up.
