Both lanes of La. 28 remain closed after a fatal accident caused haz-mat crews and other emergency personnel to be dispatched.
An accident between a tanker truck carrying molten sulfur and a log truck killed two individuals, according to the Louisiana State Police.
The accident, which occurred at approximately 4:10 a.m., was caused when Harold C. Durand, 54, of Pollock, failed to stop at the intersection of La. 8 and La. 28 and collided with the Mack truck, driven by Joseph J. Winford, 29, of DeRidder.
Durand was initially listed in critical condition and was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Winford was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police report that Durand was not wearing his seatbelt; it was unknown whether Winford was wearing his seatbelt.
Haz-mat crews from Fort Polk and the LSP were dispatched as a precaution.
Traffic was detoured from La. 28 to La. 117 and La. 465 while crews contained and cleaned up the scene.
