State Rep. James Armes has been appointed to the House Appropriations and the Natural Resources and Environment standing committees by House Speaker Chuck Kleckley.
"This appointment in an honor since it affords me the opportunity to have a stronger voice in the budget process for my constituents and also for the entire region. A sound budget policy is vital to the state's economic well-being, especially during these difficult times of reduced revenue and looming deficits. I pledge to explore all available options in order to continue vital services for the benefit of all our citizens."
The appropriations committee has jurisdiction of the state budget including deposit and investment of public monies, expenditure and appropriation of state funds and fiscal control. With the House Ways and Means Committee, it also oversees the state's construction budget.
Armes will also serve as on the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget.
As a member of the Natural Resources and Environment Committee, Armes will review legislation on natural resources, conservation, public lands, mines and minerals, mineral resources of public lands, wildlife and fisheries, hunting, fishing, and recreational boating, tidelands, air quality, hazardous waste and land pollution, among others.
Armes will also serve on the Special Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs.
The increased overseas service of our military men and women affects their families and communities and it is important that we support them and their loved ones as they serve to protect our freedom. Further, we must not forget the needs of our veterans who have also served and sacrificed to protect our country. We owe all of these men and women a tremendous debt of gratitude. For this reason, I welcome the opportunity to serve on this committee and to be a part of offering recommendations to help make the lives of these citizens more secure."
Armes is serving his second term in the House.
