The Leesville Fire Department has received 12 complete sets of structural fire fighting gear and 20 complete sets of self-contained breathing apparatus, items which will enable Leesville's firefighters to work in oxygen deficient air and will limit their exposure to heat and toxic gases.
FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant was formed in 2001 to help firefighters and other first responders in obtaining critically needed equipment, vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. Over 16,200 applications were submitted by fire departments in FY2010. One of which was Leesville Fire Departments $124,984 winning submission.
"Firefighters require the best personal protective clothing and equipment available because of the hostile environments in which they perform their duties, said Leesville Fire Chief Dewaine Lawson. Fighting fires, performing rescues and delivering emergency services are inherently dangerous activities. Now, thanks to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Homeland Security, the Leesville Fire Department is better prepared to operate at the scene of an emergency."
