The Security Force Assistance Brigade Training Team from 5th Battalion, 353rd Infantry Regiment, 162nd Infantry Brigade and the Directorate of Culture and Counterinsurgency of the 162nd Inf Bde, successfully trained soldiers from the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Ohio Army National Guard, while at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Mississippi. The 37th IBCT, comprised of battalions from Ohio and Michigan as well as from other states such as Pennsylvania, Washington and Illinois, are preparing for deployment to Afghanistan Security Force Assistance Teams.
The teams’ mission is to work with the Afghanistan Army’s Command and Staff to unify actions to generate, employ and sustain local, host-nation or regional security forces in support of a legitimate authority. To have an effective working relationship with their host-nation counterparts, the 137 combat advisors were trained on what they could expect once deployed. They received classes in culture, language, Islam and an overview of the country and people living within Afghanistan, as well as other classes to help them understand how the Afghan Army operates.
The 5th Bn SFAB Training Team, consists primarily of combat advisors, mentors and new combat advisors during key leader engagements. Cultural role players are provided, many of whom have served as actual Afghan commanders. These role players enhance the level of realism and give combat advisors an understanding of what to expect when deployed to Afghanistan. The combat advisors must also use Dari-speaking interpreters during the meetings that train them in how the interpreters are best utilized. The engagements include realistic scenarios such as planning training, corruption, and drug abuse, and are designed to challenge the combat advisors’ knowledge of what they have learned and how to manage the problems they will face downrange.
