"Kyle was a good boy," said Anacoco Chief of Police Randall Bryan on Friday after receiving the news that Brandon Kyle Smith, 17, of Huntsville, Texas, and formerly of Anacoco, had died as the result of an accidental shooting earlier this week.
Most of Smith's family still resides in Anacoco said Bryan.
On Wednesday November 18, shortly after 8 p.m., deputies with the Walker County Sheriff’s Department responded to the shooting at a residence on Wood Farm road in Northeastern Walker County.
Smith had sustained a single gun shot wound to the chest area, according to Sgt. Keith DeHart of the Walker County Sheriff's Department. Deputies administrated CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived to transport Smith to the Emergency Room at Huntsville Memorial Hospital. He later died there.
The shooting is being investigated as a possible accident said DeHart. Deputies brought a 16-year-old white male in for further questioning but later released him. No charges have been filed in connection to the shooting.
According to an article on the "Huntsville Item" website, following the shooting,  investigators recovered a weapon, believed to be a .44 Magnum revolver, at the home where the shooting took place. In that article, published Thursday morning, Smith is not named as the victim pending notification of his extended family.
Smith, a lifelong resident of Anacoco and Vernon Parish, moved to Huntsville, Texas about a year ago to live with his grandmother, according to his obituary, which described the teen as an avid outdoorsman and "a very loving and outgoing person who never met a stranger."
Smith was a sophomore at Huntsville High School.
