Leesville will be home to a number of Mardi Gras festivities starting at 9 a.m.on Saturday.
The Main Street Gumbo Cook Off will start at 9 a.m. at the Third Street Market. Setup begins at 7 a.m and judging begins at 11:30 a.m. for the categories; pork and chicken, seafood, wild game and vegetarian. For all-you-can-eat gumbo, adults pay $7 and children $3. The Mayor's Women's Commission will also hold a bead walk for children, which officials say will be similar to a cake walk, except children who participate will win beads instead of cake.
Prizes for the gumbo cook off include a $500 grand prize for each category as well as a $100 cash prize for the best decorated booth and the people's choice award.
The 2012 Vernon Parish Mardi Gras Parade, hosted by the Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce will kick off at 2 p.m. on Third Street in downtown Leesville.
The first float introducing the carnival celebration will be the grand marshals of the parade, Fort Polk's Wounded Warriors. Wearing their own T-shirts designed by the chamber, the float will have over 50 people on board with over 8,000 beads to throw. The chamber said that there are over 23 floats entered in the parade, which include local krewes, fire departments and civic organizations.
Float line-up starts at 12 p.m. and will take place near Berry Avenue and Mechanic Street. During line-up, these two streets will become one-way beginning at noon. Traffic will go south on Berry Avenue from Leesville High School.
The Chamber of Commerce is asking members to donate any unwanted mardi gras beads to the chamber office. An entry fee of $20,to cover parade special event insurance, should be turned in with entry forms no later than today. An award will also be presented to the "Best of Parade."
Groups who have questions about where to line up for the parade are asked to call the chamber at (337) 238-0349.
