Main Street Manager Sam Kincade expects to host Movies on Main Street in the Polk Outdoor Theatre to be constructed on Texas Street in Leesville, this spring. Skits from local school drama clubs and other organizations are also possibilities.
The city received the small parcel of land by donation during the previous administration and began then to plan for the space to be used as an outdoor theatre.
Behind the scenes work has been going on for more than a year to fund and construct the project.
Local landscape architect James Turner designed the theatre, while application for grant monies was made. The city received approximately $11,000 for the project. However, the lowest bid on the project was almost twice that amount at $21,000. It became apparent that the grant money received would only suffice to buy the materials for the project.
The bids were ultimately rejected, and students at Central Louisiana Technical College Lamar Salter campus were enlisted to do the labor for the project.
Work is expected to begin in the spring semester with a completion date by Mayfest.
The cost of the project, $11,000, is funded through a grant. The completion date is set for this spring, before Mayfest, 2012.
