Travis announces bid for re-election

Four year incumbent, presently the Vice President of the Vernon Parish School Board, former military officer Vernon Travis, #84 is a candidate for re-election for Vernon Parish District 6 School Board.
Travis, 48, is a JRTC Counter Improvised Explosive Device Enabler Integration Manager for A-T Solutions and a former Intelligence Planner for Cubic Defense Applications.Travis said that he has 24 years of leadership, 24 years of management experience, and four years as a Louisiana State School Board Certified School Board member.
"This experience coupled with serving on the Federal Relation Network which is responsible for annually visiting Washington DC to coordinate directly for education with our state senators and representatives and having been appointed to several other Louisiana School Board Association committees along with many Vernon Parish School Board committees has provided me with the required experience and knowledge to be the most qualified candidate," said Travis.
Travis, a native of Bogalusa, has made Leesville his home for 45 years.
An attendee of Vernon Elementary, a graduate of Leesville High School, he has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Northeast Louisiana University and studied psychology at Northwestern State University. While attending college, Travis was recognized and honored as the LA Outstanding ROTC Cadet.
He served in the Louisiana National Guard for four years where he earned a Meritorious Service Medal. He also served in the U.S. Army for eight years, earning the army and defense service ribbons, the Army Achievement Medal 4th Oak Leaf, The Army Achievement Medal 2nd Oak Leaf, and the Meritorious Service Medal 4th Oak Leaf.
Travis presently serves as the chairman on the Mayor’s Committee for the Veteran Park, Education and Oratorical Committee for the American Legion, Past Commander of American Legion Post 510, and member of VFW Post 3106. He attends Ellen Burr Baptist Church, where he serves as the President of the Brotherhood.
Travis a father of four said he will continue to work for what is best for all our children, parents, District 6, and Vernon Parish and not what is best for only one or two individuals.
"I will continue to be accessible to District 6 and Vernon Parish,” he added. "I have four major goals if re-elected: 1. Keep our children’s education and future as a number one priority. 2. Represent and work for everyone to the utmost. 3. Maximize the use of funding to maintain the best qualified teachers and staff. 4. Focus all available resources to modernize facilities and equipment."
Travis offerd thanks to everyone for the past four years that he was allowed to work for the people, and he asks to do so for four more years.
He listed as his accomplishments:
-Elected to vice president of Vernon Parish School Board.
-Chaired Goals and Objective Committee and updated 15 year old goals.
-Member of LHS Building Committee and assisted in securing a $21.5 Million Bond for needed improvement.
-Added Acoustic sound ceiling to gym, resurfaced gym floor, and painted entire gym at Vernon Middle School.
-Repaired bus loading area at Vernon Middle School.
-Instrumental in getting the first minority director and head football coach hired in Vernon Parish since integration.
-Worked with the superintendent to insure diversity in the work place.
-Instrumental in keeping jobs and promoting from within our district and parish by promoting hiring individuals from within, which resulted in one director, two supervisors, one warehouse manager, three to four aides, and more.
-Worked to get bus driver a fuel supplement increase during the fuel crisis.
-Worked to get maintenance workers greatly needed pay raises.
-Assisted in getting District members promoted throughout the system.
